Studio E9’s building has a storied history.
The home of Studio E9 was built in 1900. For the past several decades, neighbors knew it as a local grocery store and then an antique shop. Prior to that, it is believed it was a distribution outpost for the Des Moines Register and Des Moines Tribune. Most recently, it laid vacant for a few years after a water pipe froze and then burst causing damage.
After a change of ownership, it underwent an extensive refurbishment, which was completed in 2023. The original hardwood floors have been brought back to life, the ceiling raised to 16’ and the interior brick exposed. Along with new windows, electric, A/C and plumbing, a new bathroom and kitchenette were also added.
A half-acre orchard lays to the north of the building — a remnant of a previous railroad track that used to cut through the neighborhood. Both the studio and orchard are available to photographers, creatives and for small events like bridal and baby showers.

What’s now a brick courtyard to the south, used to be the location of a resembling larger mixed use brick building that apparently burned down several decades ago.
